U.S. Imports of Silk Products from China, January–August 2022

According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Commerce, in August, imports of silk products from China totaled 148 million U.S. dollars, representing a year-on-year increase of 15.71% but a month-on-month decrease of 4.39%. These imports accounted for 30.05% of total global imports, a share that continues to decline—having fallen by approximately 10 percentage points since the beginning of the year.

I. U.S. Imports of Silk Products from China in August

According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Commerce, in August, imports of silk products from China totaled $148 million, up 15.71% year-on-year but down 4.39% month-on-month. These imports accounted for 30.05% of total global imports, a share that continues to decline—having fallen by about 10 percentage points since the beginning of the year.

Specifically as follows:

Silk products: Imports from China totaled US$1.301 million, up 197.40% year-on-year and 141.85% month-on-month. The market share reached 66.64%, a significant increase compared to the previous month. The import volume was 31.69 tons, up 99.33% year-on-year and 57.20% month-on-month, with a market share of 79.41%.

Silk and satin: Imports from China totaled US$4.1658 million, down 31.13% year-on-year and 6.79% month-on-month. The market share stood at 19.64%. Although the share remained relatively unchanged, China's ranking among import sources dropped to third place, while Taiwan rose to second.

Finished products: Imports from China totaled US$142 million, up 17.39% year-on-year but down 4.85% month-on-month. The market share was 30.37%, a slight decrease compared to the previous month.

II. U.S. Imports of Silk Products from China from January to August

From January to August 2022, U.S. imports of silk products from China totaled $1.284 billion, an increase of 45.16% year-on-year, accounting for 32.20% of the U.S.'s total imports from around the world and making China the top supplier of silk products to the U.S. Among these:

Silk products: Imports from China totaled US$4.3141 million, up 71.92% year-on-year, with a market share of 42.82%, ranking first in silk product import value. The quantity imported was 114.30 tons, up 0.91% year-on-year, with a market share of 45.63%.

Silks and Satins: Imports from China totaled US$37.8414 million, down 5.11% year-on-year, with a market share of 21.77%, ranking second among import sources for silks and satins.

Finished products: Imports from China totaled 1.242 billion U.S. dollars, up 47.46% year-on-year, with a market share of 32.64%, ranking first among import sources.

III. Situation of U.S. Imports of Silk Products Subject to an Additional 10% Tariff from China

Since 2018, the United States has imposed a 10% import tariff on 25 Chinese products classified under eight-digit customs codes, including silk cocoons and silk fabrics. Specifically, this includes 1 code for raw silk cocoons, 7 codes (actually encompassing 8 ten-digit codes) for silk products, and 17 codes (actually encompassing 37 ten-digit codes) for silk fabrics.

1. The situation of U.S. imports of Chinese silk products subject to additional tariffs in August

In August, U.S. imports of silk products from China—subject to an additional 10% tariff—totaled US$2.3272 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 77.67% and a month-on-month increase of 68.28%. The market share reached 31.88%, a significant rise from the previous month. Details are as follows:

Silkworm cocoons: Imports from China are zero.

Silk products: Imports from China totaled US$1.301 million, up 197.40% year-on-year and 141.85% month-on-month. The market share reached 66.64%, a significant increase compared to the previous month. The import volume was 31.69 tons, up 99.33% year-on-year and 57.20% month-on-month, with a market share of 79.41%.

Silk and Satin: Imports from China totaled US$1.0262 million, up 17.63% year-on-year and 21.44% month-on-month, with a market share of 19.19%. The quantity amounted to 117,200 square meters, an increase of 25.06% year-on-year.

2. U.S. Imports of Silk Products from China Subject to Additional Tariffs, January–August

From January to August, U.S. imports of silk products from China—subject to the additional 10% tariff—totaled US$11.3134 million, an increase of 66.41% year-on-year. These products accounted for 20.64% of the U.S. import market share, making China the second-largest supplier. Among them:

Silkworm cocoons: Imports from China are zero.

Silk products: Imports from China totaled US$4.3141 million, up 71.92% year-on-year, with a market share of 42.82%, ranking first in silk product import value. The quantity imported was 114.30 tons, up 0.91% year-on-year, with a market share of 45.63%.

Silk and Satin: Imports from China totaled US$6.9993 million, up 63.40% year-on-year, with a market share of 15.65%, ranking fourth among import sources. The quantity amounted to 891,000 square meters, an increase of 52.70% year-on-year.
